Trek to Adam's peak with a local on an off the beaten route
Get ready for an exhilarating trek all the way up to the sacred mountain, Adam’s Peak, Sri Lanka’s fifth highest mountain soaring up at 2.243 meters (7,360 feet). Climb up 5,500 steep steps before reaching the peak with its panoramic backdrop of distant mountains, misty valleys and dense forest cover. Experience a sensational sunrise to the tolling of temple bells and religious chanting before paying homage to the sacred footprint or ‘Sri Pada’. During the pilgrimage season, which is from December – April each year, it is relatively crowded with pilgrims while the off-season period with its challenging weather conditions is a must for the more daring. The return journey is an exciting escapade through a montane rain forest that belongs to the peak wilderness sanctuary surrounding Adam’s Peak. Trekking through the dense greenery with the smell of the good earth all around and the fresh chilly air on your face is an awe-inspiring experience. Passing by you will have the opportunity to see the Gartmore Falls and maybe the Murray Falls too if your not too tired. Take in the beautiful scenery with plenty of endemic birds around and if your lucky enough you may spot Sambur Deer and Leopard too.
