Pekoe Trail & Bambarakanda Waterfall Trekking

The day 1 trek commences from Haputale a quaint mountainous town set at an elevation of 1431 m above sea level and boasts of rich biodiversity. A walk through the Tangamale Bird sanctuary will take you to the Monastery run by Benedictine Monks. After looking around and enjoying the bungalow that was built in 1931 by a British planter named Sir Thomas Villiers we will proceed on the rail track passing through rail tunnels when we will reach the Idalgashinna Railway Station noted for its beautiful location. Thereafter continue through a tea plantation road to a remote and beautiful village in Ohiya. Be welcomed by misty gusts, cool breeze native tea plantation workers. A basic lodge will be your accommodation for the night with plenty of local food and cultural entertainment by the plantation folk.

On day 2 we will trek towards Horton Plains on the forest road shrouded with fog and interspersed with scenic patches, wildlife and plenty of birdlife, after trekking for close to 5 km we will reach Horton Plains and World’s End with its large plains of montane grasslands and cloud forests situated at an altitude of 2,100-2,300 meters above sea level. After exploring Horton Plains we will leave for Bambarakanda where Sri Lanka’s highest waterfall (263m) is situated. This panoramic trek through ‘Devil’s Staircase’ named so because of its twists, turns, steep bends and sharp climbs. At Bambarakanda take the trail that leading to the top of the falls through pine forests and grasslands. At the base of the fall is a pool that is ideal for a cool dip before moving on to see the Lanka Falls close by.
