Day 1 & 2 - Colombo

Arrival in Colombo International Airport and meet with our driver. You will be then transferred to a sub urban area in Colombo for two nights stay at simple guest house. You are then free to explore the area on your own and one of our guides will pick you from the guest house for an afternoon half a day guided city tour of Colombo where you will be exploring the important buildings of capitol Colombo followed by a street food tour near Galle Face Green.

Day 3 & 4 - Anuradhapura

On day three you will be transferred to Colombo Fort Railway Station to get on board the train to scared city of Anuradhapura. The train leaves Colombo at 8.50 AM and journey takes approximately 5 hours. Upon arrival in Anuradhapura, you may hire a taxi to go the hotel in Anuradhapura for two nights stay. We suggest that you have leisurely afternoon chilling out by the pool.

On day four, you could explore sacred Anuradhapura ruined temples and palaces where you would be able to observe centuries old pilgrim rituals of Sinhala Buddhist people. You may also head your way to Mihintale Rock Monastery, the birth place of Buddhism in Sri Lanka.

Day 5 & 6 - Habarana/Sigiriya

On day five, catch a public bus plying from Anuradhapura to Dambulla which is approximately 2 ½ hours journey. Upon arrival in Dambulla, hire a Tuk Tuk and head your way to Habarana which is only 30 minutes away from Dambulla and you will be centrally accommodated to attractions of Sigiriya and Pidurangala. Upon arrival in Habarana, chill out by the pool that afternoon.

On day 6, our cycling guide will pick you from the hotel for a guided cycle trip in Sigiriya village where you would be able to explore typical villages, farming fields, daily routine of villagers, visit Pidurangala monastery and finally climbing the Sigiriya Rock Fortress followed by a home cooked lunch at a typical village home.

Day 7, 8 & 9 - Kandy

Catch a public bus from Dambulla town to go to the historical city of Kandy, just under 2 ½ hours ride and you will staying in a small guest house in the heart of Kandy town where you would be able to walk to the town and explore hustle and bustle of the city centre and even visit the Temple of Tooth Relic during a sermon to observe Buddhist rituals. The casket carrying Lord Buddha’s Tooth will be open for public viewing during the evening sermon so plan for this moment.

On day two, our trekking guide will pick you from the guest house for a rural village trekking trip of half a day in the foot hills of Knuckles mountains where you will be able to witness simple way of life of the mountainous villagers. Terraced rice fields, forest patches, gushing streams are to be witnessed during the trek and you will be taken to a rural village home for a home cooked lunch. Once returned to the guest house, you are free to explore Kandy on your own.

On day three, a lady host will pick you from the guest house to go to a typical market followed by an authentic cooking experience at her home. This is a very good cultural exchange for you to interreact and share the experiences of typical Sri Lankan people and is a good culinary journey. After a brief leisure time, the lady host will accompany you to explore the village she is living and its diligent inhabitants who indulge in various cottage industries and various agricultural practices in order to make a living. Enjoy the evening breeze and the serene environment while talking to the villagers about their culture and lifestyles. Watch how Kitul Treacle is tapped from the Kitul palm and how this sugary sweet sap is concentrated under high heat to be poured into moulds which is then turned into jaggery. You would also visit a few homes to watch the production of hand-made incense sticks, creative woodwork and the weaving of reed baskets and mats. After enjoying a cup of plain tea with Kitul jaggery we will visit a small tea plantation to observe closely the hand harvesting of tea, a village vegetable farm, a rice field and a domestic spice garden. Thereafter return to her home for tea served with traditional sweetmeats. You will be transferred to the guest house in Kandy to stay overnight.

Day 10 - Nuwara Eliya

Get on board the train from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya at 8.47 AM to enjoy a very scenic train journey to the very heart of the Tea plantation. You will be booked with 2nd class reserved seats to enjoy the view. The train is approximately 4 hours journey and, in the afternoon, you could explore Nuwara Eliya town and market or spend some time at leisure. You will be staying a simple hotel just for one night in the centre of town making it easy for you to explore the town. Nuwara Eliya once was the summer retreat for British and Scottish planters in the colonial days and to date you would be able to witness the remnants of colonial past.

Day 11 - Ohiya

On this day, our trekking guide will pick you from the hotel in Nuwara Eliya and transfer you to Horton Plains NP, just 1 ½ hours drive approximately through the highland forests passing very scenic meadows and grassy plains to a very scenic and experiential walk from Nuwara Eliya to Ella. Our guide will take you on a nature trail in Horton Plains NP to witness World's end point and Baker's waterfall through grassy plains. Horton Plains NP is a very important eco system where many rivers of Sri Lanka start its headway. Horton Plains once was a hunting ground for colonial planters where the hunting practice saw the extinction of the Elephants in the plains. Leopards, Samber Deer, Lizards and many varieties of birds call Horton Plains their home.

After Horton Plains, you will be trekking to remote hamlet of Ohiya through tea estates and jungle patches to stay an overnight in a very remote lodge meant for trekkers. This trek is an ideal way to understand and witness the way of life of ethnic Tamil community who works in the Tea estates. Bring some candy, pens, pencils to gift the village children who will appreciate it wholeheartedly. At the lodge, the staff will sing ethnic Tamil Songs to keep you entertained in the evening and you could clad in traditional Tamil costumes to make few photos to remember.

Day 12 & 13 - Ella

After breakfast, trek through some of the very scenic plains and mountain routes through rail roads, tunnels, rain forest patches and very remote Tea estates to Haputale. This one of the most scenic trekking trails in Sri Lanka and is only for the lucky few who wants to venture off the beaten path. When you arrive in Haputale, our guide will arrange you a Tuk Tuk to go to Ella where you will be staying for two nights in a simple guest house with commanding views of Ella gap. Rest of the day you could spend relaxing at the guest house.

Next day, you could explore Ella on your own visiting 9 Arch Bridge and Little Adam’s Peak, some of the most photographed attractions in Sri Lanka. Trying various local dishes in one of the popular eateries is not to be missed. Why not a spa therapy in Ella town?

Day 14 & 15 - Wellawaya

Another adventure is set to begin, an authentic rural farm stay in a very rural and scenic backdrop in Wellawaya is a good mix of cultural, agricultural and wildlife experience of two nights. Catch a bus plying to from Ella to Matara, this service is very frequent and our guide will receive you in Wellawaya and take you to the rural farm stay for two nights adventure. A pure local and rustic experience where you could immerse in culture and wildlife.

On these two days you would be able to explore the farming fields with local farmers, go fishing with local lake fishermen, canoe in a traditional catamaran in the lake, go watching birds, cook a typical farm meal and go to see wild Elephants in the backyard of the farm stay followed by a sundowner. This is a very good private wildlife viewing experience as this is only for resident guests at the farm stay. On 2nd night you will be offered an outdoor BBQ dinner amidst a roaring campfire under millions of stars. Surely, this is going to be the highlight of your trip.

It is now time to hit the beach. Our guide at the farm stay will bring you to Wellawaya after breakfast to catch the bus coming from Ella to Matara where you need to get down in Tanagalle, a picture post card style idyllic beach. For three nights you will be staying in a wooden beach cabana under the shade of swaying coconut trees. Just sleep under the shade, sun bath and get that perfect tan under the tropical sun. Day 22 - Negombo

You have come to the last sector of your Sri Lankan self-explorer adventure. We book you for a 3rd class reserved train journey from Galle to Colombo Fort. The train leaves at 10.55 AM and is approximately a 2 ½ hour journey along the coastal belt of Sri Lanka. Why 3rd class seats? That is where the real experience is.

When you arrive in Colombo Fort Railway station, buy a ticket from the Fort Railway station to Negombo in one of the Colombo Commuter trains to go to Negombo for the last night in Sri Lanka. Colombo Commuter is regular service every 1 ½ hours which connect Negombo with Colombo. Once you arrive in Negombo, catch a Tuk Tuk to the hotel in Negombo beach, a 3 star hotel with a swimming pool.
