Colonial architecture with its magnificent structures abounds in Sri Lanka. It can be seen mostly in Colombo and the Hill country with lesser numbers dispersed around the island. Some of the greater masterpieces in the capital city are the iconic Galle Face and Mt. Lavinia Hotel, both British Governors mansions, the Old Town Hall, the beautiful Cargills Building, The University of Colombo and the National Museum. In the Hill country the spectacular Adisham Monastery built similar to the Leeds Castle in Kent, the Hill Club corresponding to a miniature Victorian Castle, St. Andrew’s Hotel a Tudor style Mansion, The Grand Hotel, the residence of Governor Edward Barnes and plenty of plantation bungalows and Victorian style Mansions exist. There are six Commonwealth war cemeteries in Sri Lanka, four in Colombo, one in Kandy known as the Kandyan Garrison Cemetery (1817) with over 150 British graves; a grand memorial of British Noblemen and the Trincomalee British war Cemetery; buried here are Soldiers of the British Empire who died during World War 11.
