Situated 80 miles north from Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka, Puttalam is a small but very populous town. Famous for salt and fishing, Puttalam is the home to one of Sri Lanka\'s largest lagoons, also called Puttalam lagoon.
Apart from salt and fishing, the main income for the Puttalamians is from agriculture and trading. Many people own coconut estates in the areas surrounding the town. The so called prawn farming is an exciting new investment opportunity for both people within and outside Puttalam. One of country\'s main cement plant is located in Puttalam.
The town has five or six large schools catering to the educational needs of the population of Puttalam and the surrounding villages. Daily bus transport is available to major cities like Colombo, Kurunegala, Kandy and Anuradhapura. There is a train service between Puttalam and Colombo. For individual transport within the city, people use bicycles and motorbikes. Very few own cars. Three-wheeler and van taxi services are freely available. One state-operated hospital and many private clinics look after the heath-related issues.
Soccer is the most popular sport in Puttalam. Many clubs play in local league and also take part in national level competitions. Cricket and volleyball come next.
Although not known much historically like Kandy and Anuradhapura are or not home to beautiful scenic views like Nuwara-Eliya is, Puttalam has everything a quintessential Sri Lankan town could offer.
A Canvas tent utilized as shelter during long jungle expeditions is known as a “Kudarama” in local lingo. Such means of shelter were not known or seen before the advent of European influence in Sri Lanka .
