The Little England - Nuwara Eliya - is the land of flowers, the holiday maker's paradise guarded by a salient mountain range.

Its most enthusiastic proponent was Sir Samuel Baker, who stuck his walking stick into the ground and determined to create an English Village. A chartered ship brought all he needed to make his dream come true: a Bailiff with his wife and daughter, and nine other emigrants, including a Blacksmith, farming instruments, cattle, rams, all kinds of seed, a small pack of fox hounds, and a favourite grey hound called Bran. Only Barley and Oats flourished and he had soon established another essential part of the village - a brewery.

With that start, today Nuwara Eliya has become an upcountry vegetable market with plenty of tomatoes, cabbage, turnips, leeks, and beans.

Hill stations with a cool climate surround the obviously British houses built in various styles - Victorian, half-timbered, mock, tudor, and gothic. There is the Anglican Holy Trinity Church with fine stained glass standing in a churchyard, a clock tower, and a period post office. The main Roman Catholic church is dedicated to St. Francis Xavier, the Apostle of the East.

Among the town's attractions are its old fashioned hotels, one of which is The Rock.

The Bazaar around the bus stand is modern, catering to the needs of the local people and plantation workers. The picturesque golf course and the well kept Victoria Park are very popular among the visitors to Nuwara Eliya today. At the entrance to the park there is the tourist information centre facilitated by the Central Provincial Council.

The Lake Gregory maximises the beauty of the City, and the Galways Sanctuary is popular among the nature lovers with a wide variety of birds.

10 km south-west of Nuwara Eliya is the country's most spectacular botanical garden, "Hakgala". The Horton Plains nature reserve, 30 km from Nuwara Eliya is a wind-swept grassland intersected by streams, extending over a saddle of land 2130 metres high, standing on the border of the Uva and Central Provinces.
