Villa Sunbird Negombo Sri Lanka

Overview of Villa Sunbird Negombo

Gazing at the silver blue of the Indian Ocean across a stretch of isolated beachfront are two Dutch styled buildings which make up Villa Sunbird. Saffron coloured walls streaked by the sun and vigorous sea breezes contrast pleasantly with the lush green lawns and kaleidoscopic sky.

The two villas are named Kingfisher and Jacana. Each Villa has three double rooms with en-suite shower and toilet in each room. All, but one room faces the sea. Originally designed to be an escape from the stress of Colombo for the owners, the villas permit a more relaxed and private holiday without the formality of most hotels. One can choose one’s own menu with the Chef, or even watch and learn how he makes a great curry. There are two “butler” staff to attend to guests needs, but they are discreet.

Accommodation of Villa Sunbird Negombo

The bedrooms are simply styled with four poster beds dressed in inviting crisp white cotton bed linen. Each room contains a modern ensuite wet room with shower (one with a bath).

The Villas contain some wonderful antique Dutch and Jaffna furniture. Sit down on the old mahogony desk and bang out that best seller with a Gin and Tonic in hand? The prints on the walls depict a Ceylon of a bygone era.

Five of the six rooms are sea facing and look out onto wonderful views of the Catamarans on the horizon and spectacular sunsets.

All the rooms have air conditioners and fans, though you may find that the ocean breeze suffices.

Dining of Villa Sunbird Negombo

Villa Sunbid is staffed with a talented cook who provides a variety of delicious meals.

Those with a sense of adventure should take a tuk tuk to the local fishing market in Vennapuwa (approximately 2 kilometers North along the beach road). The drive along the beach road will take you through the fishing communities where the wives and children of the fishermen display the morning’s catch. Whilst fresh fish is available within a few hundred meters of Villa Sunbird, these tend to be the smaller variety. The larger fish and variety of shell fish are found at the Vennapuwa fish market which really is a sight (and smell) to remember. Located along the seashore of the fishing harbour, the tiny stalls reverberate with hustle of local trade. Sea crab, tuna, shark, sting ray, mullet, squid, prawns are displayed in all sizes, cuts, and slices. As most of the catch is bought and shipped (either overseas or within Sri Lanka) quite early, we recommend that this adventure be undertaken in the morning, preferably before 10am. Being a Catholic stronghold, no fishing and no fish market takes place on Sundays
