Barberyn Reef Ayurveda Resort, Sri Lanka\'s pioneer health resort specializing in Ayurveda, the traditional healing system of medicine dating back about 5000 years. Ayurveda tackles the stresses and ailments of modern living in a uniquely natural and holistic way.
The resort is now re-opened after an extensive renovation and refurbishment retaining the warm and friendly ambience that guests have come to love.
It may seem bizarre to claim all-pervasive \"knowledge\" of something as utterly intangible as life itself. Yet the literal translation of Ayurveda is \"knowledge\" - or more precisely, the knowledge of what is required to ensure a long life of optimal physical, mental and spiritual health.
Since Barberyn Reef Resort first started offering Ayurvedic holidays to overseas guests some 22 years ago, it has maintained the highest reputation and continues to be the leader in this field.
Barberyn Reef is one of few resorts that can be described as being literally \"on the beach\". Sand stretches for miles along the shore and the resort is sheltered by a long coral reef running the length of the property, forming a natural lagoon ideal for swimming. Barberyn provides a unique environment enabling guests to combine the benefits of Ayurveda with a memorable tropical vacation.
Come and discover how thousands have benefited from Barberyn\'s innovative approach to health, vitality and well-being through Ayurveda - and why so many guests from around the world return year after year.
With a welcome glass of fresh fruit juice served as you arrive, your journey back to health and well-being begins here...
The accommodation at Barberyn Reef consists of 75 rooms, the majority of which has been recently renovated / refurbished.
The previous Garden and Beach \"cottages\" are now clusters of rooms in several blocks - some on stilts and some on two levels (ground floor rooms and first floor rooms). All rooms are beautifully furnished with furniture made at the resort and have mosquito nets, attached toilets (shower or bath tubs) natural ventilation and electric fans, a terrace or balcony. Only a few rooms are air conditioned as most guests prefer natural ventilation which is recommended in Ayurveda.
Beach front rooms (Formerly beach cottages)
The first group of new rooms built in groups of two, four, six and eight rooms, very close to the ocean. All rooms are comfortable and elegantly furnished with wood and natural material. The majority have views of the ocean and open to a terrace or a balcony.

The Classic Rooms are located on the upper levels of the Ayurveda centre and are spacious rooms with Balconies over looking the garden.
Air conditioned Rooms
The air conditioned rooms are located in the main building (adjacent to the reception area) opening to a terrace overlooking the sea, and a separate wing of rooms over looking a grass lawn.
Located on the 1st floor of the main building, the standard rooms are with all of the amenities as in the other rooms. Each has a balcony that overlooks the garden.
Barberyn Reef is set on a long strip of Beach with a reef running the length of the property, forming a natural swimming lagoon. The landscaping at the resort is being done by Sri Lanka\'s well known landscape artist, Lucky Senanayake and his work which is on going. The resort has a casual and serene ambience which guests seem to absorb after a while.
A journalist writing in \'The Nation\' Newspaper in Thailand has remarked as follows, \"Lulled by the rhythmic pounding of the Indian Ocean nearby, relaxed by the kneading of daily oil massages, long-staying guests eventually emulate an aura of well-being, signaled by slower speech and a softer demeanor. No wonder, many of the guests end up rescheduling flights and extending their stays.\"
The Reading Room
The concept of well being at Barberyn has three dimensions – the healing of the body, developing the clarity of the mind and enhancing spiritual awareness and compassion.
Barberyn is operated by a group of people who care about people. They want their guests to feel good physically and mentally, and be stronger and better equipped for their daily life. They encourage those who come to Barberyn to reflect on the gift of life and living. Guests are thus free to use the owners\' collection of material on Eastern and Western spiritual philosophies and self knowledge. The material, including books by prize winning authors, is available in the reading room.
Guests can also borrow videos on self knowledge and inner contentment.
The arts and crafts Shop
As the suburban sprawl extends to the village, old crafts that rely on patient hand work give way to modern industries and employment in the \"factory\". In an effort to revive some of the village crafts, and provide a sales point, the Oriental Collection draws together the work of artists and crafts people from several countries in this region. Many of the products are made using skills and designs handed down from generation to generation – beautiful testaments to the region’s rich culture and history.
From naturally dyed, hand woven silks, to colourful, intricate embroideries, artifacts of wood and reed and handcrafted silver – the collection is designed to enable you to take a little treasure back with you –at a fair price.

An increasing number of guests come for shoulder pain, back ache - sciatica, insomnia, Gastritis ulcers, skin disorders , psoriasis , allergies, arthritis, to name a few. Ayurveda has very effective remedies for these medical problems.
Around the world, people search for safer medicines that have no adverse side effects. Ayurveda is not simple a collection of herbal recipes. It is a holistic and scientific system based on a profound philosophy leading to a long and healthy life without illness.
The Barberyn Reef Ayurveda Health Centre has a team of specially trained staff members, including resident Ayurveda doctors, therapists, medicine makers and acupuncture specialists.
The Barberyn approach to Ayurveda is a serious and profound one, staying true to the Ayurvedic principle of restoring the equilibrium in body, mind and spirit, thereby creating a sense of total health & well-being. To achieve this balance, we follow a thorough and carefully structured process.
Although recently embraced in the West, Yoga has been recognized and practiced for thousands of years in South Asia as a powerful complement to Ayurvedic medicine and healing. Ayurveda and Yoga come from the same philosophical matrix. They examine the body - mind concept from the perspective of maintenance of health and the treatment of disease.
The yoga practiced at Barberyn is the traditional Hatha Yoga (postures) with Pranayama (breathing) It is designed to awaken the Kundalini. This form of Yoga helps to elongate the spine and if one can keep the spine supple, then it can delay the aging process. \"You are as old as your spine\".
Yogic postures and breathing techniques have long been known for their health benefits. The 15 Century Manual on Yoga practice, the Hatha Yoga Pradipika states that as a result of the practice of postures (asana) there will be \" sturdiness, absence of disease and lightness.\"
The postures (Asana) bring pressure on the acupuncture points in the body with beneficial results. For example the \"Gomakasana\" bring pressure on the acupuncture points of the kidney. This can help in keeping the kidneys healthy and functioning properly.
Some of the Asana activate the endocrine system which consist of ductless glands. This endocrine system is responsible in keeping all the vital organs healthy and functioning properly and aims at the perfection of the body..
Apart from the curative value, Yoga brings tranquility and stillness into our lives. The two aspects of Yoga thus provide a powerful tool for coping with physical and mental stress of modern day living.
At Barberyn there is no pressure to compete and the yoga classes are designed to cater to everyone - beginners as well as advanced students - so no one feels left out. Even the most \"stiff as a board\" types will be amazed at how quickly their bodies adapt to tackle challenging and complex positions. In just a few days your body rewards you with increased flexibility and stamina.
Meditation and spiritual awareness
Ayurveda, including yoga and meditation have been central to the lifestyles of the people who own and manage Barberyn Resorts.
Traditional Buddhist customs are preserved at the resort and guests are free to participate if they wish. The resort also organizes visits to temples, churches and mosques and guests can borrow from the owners\' collection of books and audio/ video material on spiritual aspects of life on a range of subjects including \"Self Knowledge\".
Experienced teachers conduct meditation sessions and lectures periodicaly that are free of religious bias or pressure. Two main meditative approaches are offered:
-Breathing-oriented meditation (such as Buddhist Satipatthana-Vipassana), which helps to open a new perceptual channel in the mind and strengthen self-awareness.
-Loving-kindness meditation (known in Sri Lanka as metta) which, as the name suggests, promotes kindness and compassion towards oneself and others.
Of course, attendance is purely voluntary. These activities are provided for the benefit of interested guests—to satisfy their intellectual curiosity and to enhance their knowledge and experience.
