The Kandyan Manor Sri Lanka

Overview of The Kandyan Manor

Seductively embraced by the calm whisperings of nature in a land of varied beauty and attractions of nature and history, The Kandyan Manor stands surrounded by lush green shrub jungle amidst a rural village in the hills of what is known for centuries and the Paradise Isle. Kandy, the former capital of the last Sri Lankan kingdom with a monarchy dating back to nearly 2,500 years, is hallowed as the home of the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha.

The Kandyan Manor is a traditional Walauwa (Manor) dating from more nearly two centuries ago, in the central hills of Sri Lanka, when the Kandyan Kingdom was still free of advancing colonial invaders from Britain. Kandy is today a UNESCO World Heritage Site and much of what is around The Kandyan Manor is steeped in this rich history.

The property now managed by the fifth generation of Kandyans who have family inheritance to it, is a truly peaceful setting. The Manor is surrounded by well tended gardens and five and a half acres of lush shrub jungle that borders on village rice paddies, in a typical hill country rural environment of Sri Lanka.

The historic 400 year old Buddhist temple “Sri Rajasingharamaya” is just a two minute walk away from the Manor, and the same short distance away is the “Ambalama” – a place built by the kings of the past for travelers to break journey and rest, especially at night, which is well preserved to this day. The “Ambalama” is also where itinerant traders exchanged goods for sale, where travelers from different localities befriended each other.

Its alluring and cozy atmosphere in tranquil surroundings is ideal to unwind and enjoy a relaxed holiday. The area is a paradise for bird watchers to listen to the chirps and songs at sunrise and observe an amazing variety of rare and colourful birds.

A 2KM nature walk in the vicinity to observe the awakening of village life is breathtaking for the hiker or trekker and naturalist. It also offers picturesque village scenery for the artist and a grand view of the Hunasgiriya peak in the distance, with fascinating scenery for both artists and photographers.

Hosts, Bhathiya and Suzy Ratwatte and their staff, assure you of comfort convenience and friendship in the best of traditional Sri Lankan hospitality. They provide delicious home made meals, in a range of tastes and choices, cooked in the traditional way on fire wood.
