Niyagama House-Galle Sri Lanka

Overview of Niyagama House-Galle

The retreat Niyagama House, situated on the highest point of an active tea plantation, was completed in 2012 by the German architect and yoga teacher Elke de Silva and her Sri Lankan husband Chaminda. By combining modern elements with traditional Sri Lankan design, it is an absolute architectural highlight.

The seven generous rooms are equipped with high quality furniture and luxurious bathrooms. From every room you have a wonderful view into nature. The peaceful location makes it a perfect place for a relaxing holiday.

It is located nine kilometers inland from the coastal city of Galle and the historic, charming Galle Fort and in 25 minutes you will reach the southern beaches of the Indian Ocean. The distance to the airport of Colombo is 130 km.

Yoga, Massages and Excursions

Niyagama House offers the first Hot Yoga Studio in Sri Lanka. Choose daily a  morning or evening class. We do offer Hot, Vinyasa Flow, Hatha and Yin Yoga classes. For a longer stay you can also book a 3, 5 or 7 day retreat package.

In the little 'Niya Spa' you can spoil yourself with a traditional ayurvedic oil massage or other wonderful treatments. Relax by the pool with a view into the surrounding rainforest or take part in a guided tour of the plantation.

Selected, wonderful tours are offered. Get first-hand information and insider tips: The German – Sri Lankan owners, who are around on most days, are looking forward to assisting you with their knowledge about Sri Lanka.

Our Philosophy

In Niyagama House you experience a perfect blend of eastern hospitality and western comforts, full of tranquility and relaxation.

We welcome every guest from 12 years of age and onwards. Our house and pool area is non-smoking - with a "secret" smoking spot just behind the pool. And we do not serve alcohol - but you can bring your own and enjoy it where ever you want to.

Together with our attentive and friendly team, we aspire to give you the right amount of personalized attention balanced with respecting your need for space and privacy.

Our aim is simple: to do our best for you to experience beautiful holidays, that you will remember for a long time with a smile on your face!

Take a guided plantation tour

Niyagama House is situated on the highest point in the middle of our plantation. The tea pickers harvest the new tender leaves daily, and these are collected by the tea factory truck in the evening.

In our “tea nursery” the new, small plants are growing. And in the organic garden a variety of tropical fruits, vegetables and herbs are well looked after.

Nature at your fingertips

Pluck your own tealeaves or a few peppers. Pick a fresh pineapple or some small bananas for breakfast. Enjoy the scent of cinnamon leaves and learn how cinnamon sticks are harvested.

With its nine acres (approximately 36,000 square meter), the plantation offers the possibility for a nice walk, that you also can do on your own.

Accommodation of Niyagama House-Galle

A courtyard house with a serene, soothing atmosphere

Niyagama House was build in the traditional style of a courtyard house. The inner courtyard, high ceilings, airy rooms and verandahs in combination with plenty of fresh air and tropical sun make this house a comfortable and tranquil retreat.

Traditional Feng Shui

For a healthy flow of energy the rules of the Sri Lankan ‘Feng Shui’ were followed. A tradition still respected here by many people.

Plenty of space to relax

Three Verandhas, the Lounge with its ,Sunset Balcony ' and the roof terrace with 360 degree panoramic view offer plenty of space to relax.

And should the monsoon once visit our hilltop, then you can make yourself comfortable in the spacious living area with a view into the courtyard.

Pool & Garden

From the south verandah you step into the large garden, that surrounds the entire house. Here are growing tropical flowers between shady trees.

The ‘jewel’ of the garden is the large and chlorine-free 9 x 18m (29’ x 59’) pool, purified with an eco-friendly copper-silver-ionisation method. Ideal for some vigerous exercise if that is what you need or for just relaxing and cooling down in the shallow areas.

The seven ‘gemstones’ of Niyagama House

Our seven guest rooms are located on the first and second floor of the building. While three of the rooms have their private balcony, there is also plenty of additional space to ‘chill’ outside in privacy.

These are the room features:

  • Kingsize or Long King Size Canopy Bed with comfortable mattresses, soft cotton linen and pillows in different sizes.
  • Choose your favorite pillow: goose feather, kapok (100% organic, similar to cotton) or anti-allergic.
  • Air Conditioning
  • Mosquito Net
  • Ceiling Fan
  • Elegant wooden furniture with spacious wardrobe in traditional Sri Lankan style.
  • Granite floors
  • Ensuite bathroom with large ‘raindance’ shower, hand shower, high pressure hot & cold water, soft towels and hairdryer.
  • Mini Fridge – filled upon your requests
  • Complimentary drinking water
  • In room personal electric laptop-size safe
  • Free Wi-Fi
  • Telephone that connects you with the room service and the office.
  • Room Service from 7 am to 10 pm
  • Nightly turndown service
  • Daily Housekeeping
  • Laundry and ironing service

As a retreat, focusing on the optimal regeneration and wellbeing of our guests, we do offer the following service for all guests staying four nights or longer: If you don't like Air Conditioning we can take off the glass frames in front of the open wood carvings above doors and windows of your room.  These woodcarving elements allow permanent air circulation. And the additional ceiling fan will guarantee you a good and healthy night’s sleep – protected by the mosquito net.

To optimise the opportunities for rest and relaxation, we do not have televisions in our guest rooms. Instead, we aim to offer a beautiful environment in the middle of nature, where you will be undisturbed by the 'noise' and performance pressure of modern society.

All rooms are non-smoking rooms. Smoking is also not allowed throughout the whole house and the pool area.

Niyagama House, in the middle of an active tea plantation, is a perfect setting for enjoying some of the finest teas of Sri Lanka!

Choose out of our big selection of black teas, herbal teas and specialty teas.

Ayurveda & Detox

In Ayurvedic philosophy the food has always been regarded as a kind of "first medicine". As the best way to provide the body with the necessary foundation for an increased vitality and optimal health.

Therefore you will always find a selection of dishes on the menu at Niyagama House that are particularly health-promoting: from the Ayurveda kitchen, the PH diet, the raw food diet or the detox cuisine.

‘Let food be thy medicine, thy medicine shall be thy food.’  Hippocrates

Our Kitchen Philosophy

Fresh herbs and spices are used generously for taste and for their health properties.

Foods are served close to their natural state, with healthy cooking methods and no microwaves, additives, preservatives, artificial flavorings or food coloring.

Emphasis on organic ingredients wherever possible.

Low sugar. We are using palm sugar and unrefined browns sugar.

Low sodium. Our kitchen uses sea salt.

Low fat. Only healthy, cold-pressed oils – such as extra virgin olive oil, virgin coconut oil, sesame, sunflower and other virgin nut and seed oils - are used in moderation.
